Liviu Librescu

Virginia Tech hero — Holocaust survivor who gave his life to save his students

Born in Ploiești, Romania, and survived the Holocaust as a child. Became a world-renowned aeronautical engineer at Virginia Tech. On April 16, 2007 — Holocaust Remembrance Day — during the Virginia Tech shooting, Professor Librescu held his classroom door shut against the gunman, allowing all but one of his 22 students to escape through the windows before he was shot and killed. He was 76 years old.

His final act of heroism, on Holocaust Remembrance Day, made him a symbol of sacrifice and the highest human values. The Order of the Star of Romania was awarded posthumously.

He survived the Holocaust only to die protecting others.

His grandparents were Jewish emigrants from Romania who settled in Tacoma, Washington. Served as chairman from founding until his death in 2017.
